Overview

The National Urban League seeks a Manager, Health Education and Labor Policy to join our Washington Bureau. This role will report directly to the Executive Director of the Washington Bureau and cover the health, education, and workforce related policy portfolio for the National Urban League. The Manager, Health, Education, and Labor Policy will assist in advancing the National Urban League Washington Bureau’s policy and advocacy efforts in these critical areas. This position will support legislative advocacy, stakeholder engagement, and research initiatives to promote health equity, education access, and workforce development for Black and underserved communities.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, analyze, and report on legislative and regulatory developments related to health equity, education policy, and workforce development.
  • Support legislative and regulatory advocacy by drafting policy briefs, fact sheets, and public comment letters and testimony.
  • Conduct research on issues in the areas of health, education, and labor markets and propose policy solutions.
  • Engage with policymakers, advocacy organizations, and coalition partners to advance the NULWB’s health, education, and workforce policy agenda.
  • Assist in planning policy events, briefings, and roundtables to educate stakeholders and promote policy solutions.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for advocacy campaigns, task forces, and working groups.
  • Contribute to NULWB’s communications strategy by drafting blog posts and newsletter content.
  • Support the planning and execution of the Annual Legislative Policy Conference, including speaker coordination and materials development.
  • Facilitate communication and strategy alignment among Urban League affiliates, enhancing their capacity to respond to federal policy changes.
  • Represent the Urban League in national coalitions, partnerships, and meetings related to education and workforce development.
  • Work collaboratively with National Urban League programming staff.

Qualifications

 

EDUCATION:

 

  • Bachelor's degree in public policy, political science, education, or a related field.
  • Master's Degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

 

  • 3-5 years of experience in policy analysis, legislative affairs, or advocacy, with a focus on health, education, or labor policy. Capitol Hill or nonprofit experience is a plus.

 

SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

 

  • Knowledge of Capitol Hill and federal legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Experience working for a not-for-profit organization is strongly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Collaborative style, detailed–oriented and should enjoy working on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent organizational ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a self-directed leader and a collaborative team member.
  • Commitment to advancing racial and economic justice.
  • 25% of travel required.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at times.
